A word from Aly Bain

"I first met the Cullivoe Fiddlers during the early part of the 1970’s when Tom Anderson took me on a trip to Yell to hear as he said,” authentic traditional Shetland fiddling”. Its one trip I am very glad I made for that night I made friends with a group of fiddlers who represent the very heart of our Islands culture.

Many times since then I have tasted their hospitality and enjoyed their company. During July 2004 I had the pleasure of playing a concert with them at Falun Folk Festival in Sweden where they literally took the house down as we say, and received rave reviews in the Swedish press. It is not difficult to understand why an audience educated in fiddle music appreciated their music so much.

The Cullivoe Fiddlers play music learned from their fore fathers with great respect and care. This unique tradition has kept feet flying and faces smiling around the fire for more than one hundred years, and long may it continue to do so. Every young Shetland fiddler would be wise to listen and learn from these musicians. I hope this CD will take their music to wider audience.

As my late friend the poet Norman MacCaig wrote, this is music fit to be played in a Tenement room, in a great hall, and in the lee of a Shetland peat stack where the Aurora remembers its other name, The Merry Dancers.."

Please feel free to browse around. There is a detailed background to the fiddlers and their style on the history page, a few pictures of the older fiddlers and some from the recording session on the pictures page, and a details of the tracks included on the CD on the CD page.
